More than 20 days have passed since the detention on April 19 of leaders and activists of Belarusian independent trade unions. So far, the investigating authorities have not provided any information on the case of trade union activists.
According to the information available to human rights activists as of May 10, one of the detainees placed in the KGB pre-trial detention center, the former head of the Belarusian Trade Union of Radio and electronic industry Workers (REP), Gennady Fedynich, had been transferred to the pre-trial detention center on Volodarskogo street. He was arrested on April 19 during a mass “grab” of representatives of independent trade unions.
The leader of the REP independent trade union in Orsha Vasily Beresnev was also transferred to the pre-trial detention center on Volodarskogo street.
According to preliminary information, they are charged with participating in an extremist formation (Part 1 of Article 361 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus).
Gennady Fedynich’s health problems worsened in the pre-trial detention center : due to stress, the level of sugar in the blood cannot be brought down by insulin.
It is also known that the detainees in the KGB pre-trial detention center were not given letters and parcels sent to them. Beresnev was not even given glasses.
Some of the detained activists of independent trade unions are charged with participating in actions grossly violating public order.
So, the head of a free trade union organization in Polotsk, Nikolay Sharakh, was released from the KGB pre-trial detention center on a written undertaking not to leave and proper behavior. He is suspected under Part 1 of Art. 342 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus (participation in actions grossly violating public order).
Until now, the 66-year-old deputy chairman of the Free Metalworkers’ Union Aleksandr Evdokimchik, who is also charged under Part 1 of Art. 342 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus.
The Chairman of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions Aliaksandr Yarashuk and the Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions Siarhei Antusevich were transferred from the KGB pre-trial detention center to the pre-trial detention center on Volodarskogo street.
However, so far practically nothing is known either about the status of most of the detainees, or about the essence of the charges against them.
