Dimitris Koufontinas has been on hunger strike since January 8, 2021, after Greece’s right-wing conservative government passed a law amendment. According to this law, prisoners who have been convicted or charged as terrorists are to be transferred to high-security prisons. Due to this law, Dimitris Koufontinas was transferred from the agricultural prison near Volos to the old high security prison in Domokos.

Dimitris Koufontina’s demands are to be transferred to Korydallos Prison in Athens and to stop the arbitrary interventions against him, both legal and actual, as well as to stop the systematic discriminatory treatment against him.

On February 16, 2021, Dimitris Koufontinas was transferred to the intensive care unit at Lamia Hospital, where he has received saline solution exclusively until today, February 22, 2021. His health situation has deteriorated to the point where he can no longer absorb fluids. In addition, he has visual impairment, gum bleeding, and loss of muscle and weight. He can no longer walk and his organs are damaged.

On February 22, he demanded that the doctors stop the intravenous treatment. This means that now, on the 46th day of his hunger strike, he is also on thirst strike.

The treating physicians declare that they will not do anything against the will of their patient. This means that only the state is responsible and can prevent the death of the striker.

Dimitris Koufontinas has been imprisoned as a member of the revolutionary guerrilla organization November 17 (17N) since 2002. After a failed bomb attack by the group, in which one member was seriously injured, there were several arrests and subsequently some distancing and reciprocative accusations. Dimitris Koufontinas had successfully gone into hiding, but he voluntarily turned himself in to take political responsibility for the organization and its actions.

During his years of imprisonment, he has consistently fought and resisted. Before the current hunger strike, he had already been involved in four other hunger strikes, not only to push through his own demands, but also in solidarity with other prisoners.

He is permanently exposed to the pressure of various actors during his imprisonment. In the course of its existence, the 17N organization has attacked various targets that represent(ed) the ruling order. These have included torturers of the Greek military dictatorship, U.S. institutions and soldiers, CIA operatives, various industries and industrialists, and also a member of the current ruling party, Nea Demokratia.

Pavlos Bakoyannis, executed by 17N, was the uncle of the current Prime Minister Mitsotakis. This action, above all, explains why the Greek state and the current government are acting so unconditionally against Dimitris Koufontinas.

Support Dimitris Koufontinas in his struggle against the Greek state and the prison system.

For the immediate fulfillment of his demands!

Our passion for freedom is stronger than any repression!
