Bristol Airport is aiming to become the world’s first ‘zero carbon’ airport, which sounds positive, except when you learn that this ‘zero carbon-ness’ does not include the emissions of the actual planes. Yes, this is the purest greenwash known to humankind! As one Green Councillor commented;
An airport saying it’s becoming carbon neutral without including the flights, is like an abattoir saying they’re becoming vegan because they’re serving Quorn sausages in the canteen.
So guess who was talking at the greenwash event for the airport? Of course, Rees was. Despite the fact the council opposes the expansion;
Despite @BristolCouncil publicly opposing @BristolAirport expansion, today @MarvinJRees spoke at a pro-airport, pro-aviation shindig supporting the airport’s delusional claims to carbon neutrality. Where’s that climate emergency, eh?#NoAirportExpansion #ClimateCrisis https://t.co/BTbQHXl0tH

All this against a backdrop where the impacts are accelerating!
The impacts are likely to be much closer than most people realise, a a draft report from the world’s leading climate scientists suggests, and will fundamentally reshape life in the coming decades even if greenhouse gas emissions are brought under some control.
