After the amazing acquittal by a Jury of the 4 Colston Statue Toppling defendants on 5th January, the Colston 4 court case was concluded. This mean that funds in the #GladColstonsGone! Bristol Topplers’ Defence Fund! were left unspent.

After some discussion, the Glad Colstons Gone support campaign announced on 1st March via a FB social media post:

…We’re delighted to announce that Glad Colston’s Gone is partnering with Bristol Redistro to do a special distribution round using the outstanding funds raised in the #GladColstonsGone! Bristol Topplers’ Defence Fund!’ Gofundme.
This crowdfunder covered worst-case legal scenarios, with the plan in place that “In the event that there are funds remaining, they will be donated to local black-led anti-racist & community groups”. Eligibility will include all Black and Brown Racialised Groups, and we encourage applications from groups from across Bristol who may not easily access mainstream funding streams. Full details will be published on Bristolredistro.org when applications open (watch this space!).
Please share to groups you think might benefit!
Bristol Redistro’s mission is to give grassroots groups the power to decide how the funds they distribute are used to create social change – their practice is in opposition to the controlling philanthropy of elites such as Colston and the Society of Merchant Venturers…(see full post on FB here)

The Bristol Redistro allocation round is now live as of last night! They announced:

After the triumphant NOT GUILTY verdict in January for the ‘Colston Four’ accused, our next funding round is to redistribute the £13,518 remaining in the #GladColstonsGone! Bristol Topplers’ Defence Fund!
This will be a special one-off round run by and for Bristol-based Black and Brown-led Racialised Groups.
We encourage applications from groups from across Bristol who may not easily access mainstream funding streams.
Please share this with groups you thik might benefit!

Can you help in ensuring details of this funding round are disseminated as widely as possible? Including to those areas of the city, and local groups in those areas, who often are ignored/neglected by other funders – in many cases this would be away from Bristol’s inner city to more outlying areas. Can you use your personal contacts to inform such groups, as well as sharing widely on social media to the Bristol area the existence of this allocation round? Great if you can!

Here at AltBristol we’re #GladColstonsGone from the city centre, and that so many of his former supporters & cheerleaders have disowned him. The myths they perpetrated about Colston have been well and truly demolished, and the true origins of his wealth – from the slave trade and associated trade, and the deaths he was responsible for – are now more widely known. History has not been erased, but it has been corrected and the truth is at last being known.
There is plenty more material relating to Colston, slavery and resistance here from BRHG.
