Bristol sees more protest today as part of the global #SaveSilwan protests. The backstory here is that Silwan is a neighbourhood in East Jerusalem which is, and has been for many, many years, Palestinian. However, because it is hard for Palestinians in Jerusalem to obtain the correct permits from the Israeli authorities, the law gets used as a tool of ethnic cleansing. In this case, to clear the land of dozens of homes to make way for a ‘religious tourist park‘;
Israel says the homes were built illegally, but rights advocates point out it’s hard for Palestinians to get building permits. And Palestinians are faced with a terrible choice, destroy their homes themselves or watch Israeli authorities do it and pay thousands in fines after the fact. Palestinians say it’s all meant to drive them from Jerusalem.
This injustice has sparked a global protest on this; “Saving Silwan now on tour in Bristol outside Elbit’s “legal” office: join us at 5pm at Temple Quay BS1 6EG for a #SaveSilwan solidarity protest”
