The Turkish dictator is offering juicy contracts (with commissions?) to the EU to recognise his ‘Human Rights Campaign’ while tens of thousands of innocent political prisoners rot in his jails. For a hundred days, political prisoners in Turkey have been on hunger strike against isolation and rights violations. As the repression has continued to intensify, the prisoners are not released
even after serving their sentences.

For a hundred days, a new hunger strike by political prisoners has been carried out in Turkey against the isolation of Abdullah Öcalan and the violations of rights in Turkish prisons. Esin Çelik, co-president of the association to support prisoners TUHAY-DER in the Marmara region, spoke with ANF about the state of the hunger strike.

The first thing Çelik highlights is that there is no good news from the prisons. Hunger strikes have occurred repeatedly since 2018, and as a result, prisoners are physically weakened. In any case, many prisoners have suffered permanent damage due to prison conditions and their health is deteriorating. As the isolation in Imrali has been extended to all prisons, another hunger strike has started on 27 November.

Prisoners are not released even after serving their sentences

Since then, the repression in prisons has intensified even more, notes Esin Çelik. The AKP / MHP government ignores calls for no more deaths in prisons. Arbitrary disciplinary and isolation punishments are continually imposed, resulting in prisoners not being released even after serving their actual sentences.

According to Çelik, the Düzce prison in the Marmara region is particularly affected by massive rights violations. Prisoners have been attacked, mistreated and subjected to arbitrary punitive measures, she said.

In the Gebze women’s prison, ten inmates have been infected with the coronavirus. Esin Çelik assumes that preventive measures against the pandemic are deliberately not being taken.

Due to COVID-19, family visits cannot take place, but at the same time, especially since the beginning of the hunger strike, cells are constantly being searched and searched by the guards.

«The only contact with the outside is through the soldiers and the guards. We heard that ten women from Gebze were infected after being searched without masks or gloves, ”

Çelik tells us. It is not known how the women are doing and whether they are receiving medical treatment. Neither the relatives nor the lawyers have been informed.

“The law also applies to Abdullah Öcalan”

Esin Çelik affirms that the demand for the hunger strike is legitimate: “Mr. Öcalan has the fundamental right to contact his family and his lawyers. No person should endanger his health or die for this right to take effect. It applies to everyone and therefore also to Mr Öcalan.

The isolation must be lifted immediately. Violations of rights must end, prisoners must not receive medical treatment in handcuffs.

Threat of intensification of the hunger strike

The prisoners have made it known, through their families, that the form of the hunger strike will intensify if their demands are not met. So far, the action is taking place in groups on a rotating basis.

“We do not want more deaths in prisons,” says Çelik, who calls on human rights institutions and mass democratic organizations to take urgent action.

Regarding the “Human Rights Action Plan” announced by President Tayyip Erdogan, Çelik affirms that “this plan must be applied first in prisons. We must suspend the isolation and put an end to the violations of rights.
