These eleven episodes together present a comprehensive synthesis of Junger’s mature thought. Two texts are featured, both available from Telos Press Publishing in English translation: The full text of The Forest Passage, and the introduction essay to the later post-apocalyptic science fiction novel Eumeswil. Anti-fascist in their orientation, both texts depict ways of functioning as part of a totalitarian society, while inwardly operating as an individualist resister — what in this translation of The Forest Passage is called the “forest rebel,” and in Eumeswil, “the anarch.”

Society in the forest passage is depicted using the analogy of the Titanic. True anti-fascist anecdotes pepper the text and illustrate points, namely the point that even one forest rebel among every hundred citizens can be effective at making an insurrectionary difference to outcomes. One of the most poignant examples of these anecdotes is the father who, when police came through the neighborhood rounding people up during the Nazi era, stepped out onto the porch and shot five police officers; Junger’s claim is that, if one such forest rebel would have resisted on each block, the outcome of the roundups might have been dramatically different. Other examples of antifascist resisters are celebrated in the main text with their full stories told in lengthy footnotes.

As a bonus, enjoy the introductory essay to, arguably, Junger’s other most important work, the novel Eumeswil, in episodes 473 and 474. In Eumeswil, the character type of the forest rebel is fully developed into the anarch — an individual who is free from morals and laws, operates outside time, and resists mainstream society, among other attributes elaborated in the essay.

For those with limited time for listening, Immediatism suggests enjoying the four introductory essays and the summary of The Forest Passage which occurs at the end of episode 472.
