Will it take five weeks, five months or five years to know the truth about the Bounti village massacre? One thing is certain: the attack was perpetrated either by the Malian army or by the French army that de facto supervises it. The latter is therefore directly responsible, or at least complicit in, this massacre of civilians. Further proof of the impasse in this “war on terror” on an imperialist basis.
A reminder of the facts:
On Sunday, January 3, between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., the outskirts of the village of Bounti, in the Mopti region, were beaten three times, killing 19 men gathered for a wedding. The testimony refers to an attack by a helicopter gunship.
On 6 January, the French army conceded a bombing on the same day, at the same time, 1 kilometer from Bounti, but by a fighter jet, on a suspected jihadist group.
On 7 January, the Malian Ministry of Defence merely confirmed the French version.
The People’s Youth Community Association Tabital Pulaaku supports the villagers’ version. The Peul ethnic group is commonly amalgamated with the jihadists, and is the victim of discrimination and abuse by the Malian Armed Forces and hostile paramilitary militias. With the International Federation forHuman Rights , Tabital Pulaaku Youth is calling for an independent international investigation.
For the past seven years, Operation Barkhane has been working to eliminate dozens of jihadists every month, including aerial bombardments, with no specific military objective, no avowed political objective. An “endless war” at the risk of bloody “smudges” of the type of Bounti.
For the libertarian Communist Union, this is further proof that the French state must put an end to its imperialist intervention in the Sahel, and let the peoples of the sub-region find for themselves the political solution to this conflict.
