Welcome to Freedom Day, when the people are free!* From today you are free to take part in the UK government’s massive experiment into ‘herd immunity’. It seems that the idea is that the virus will rip though the population but death rates will be low, so all good? Except, the vaccine is only available to over 18s, so we just have to hope that there’s not too many dead or ‘long COVID’ kids left behind. The start of the experiment was celebrated by Johnson self-isolating, hurrah! Anyhow, how Bristol doing on the eve of Freedom Day?
Bristol has more confirmed cases of COVID now than at other point in the pandemic. We officially passed the previous peak last week (on 7/7). And cases are still rising, so by ‘Freedom Day’ I expect our rolling rate will probably be up around 800 per 100K. pic.twitter.com/ez5v8UugjZ

Ah that’s not too good. But what does that mean in terms of people getting ill?
There are now 39 Covid patients being treated across Bristol’s two NHS trusts as of 13 July, up from 17 last week.
➡️ There have been 5 deaths with Covid in Bristol in the week up to 15 July, (within 28 days of a positive test).
The problems with letting the virus rip are; one – it is creating more opportunities for it to propagate, giving it more exposure to vulnerable people (many of whom won’t know they are vulnerable to it, until they get it.) Two – it creates more generations of virus so leading to more chances of a new strain that could, for example, better evade the vaccines.
A statement signed by 120 scientists published in The Lancet – including former Government chief scientific advisor Sir David King – has branded the Government’s mass infection strategy as “dangerous and premature”. Not only would hundreds of thousands of people be likely to acquire Long COVID (as many as 5,000 a day, according to the Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng), letting the virus spread in this way “provides fertile ground for the emergence of vaccine-resistant variants”, which would “place all at risk, including those already vaccinated, within the UK and globally”.
So yeah, this is basically Freedom Day in Bristol. Freedom for the virus.
I’ve tried 6 places in Bristol to get more lateral flow tests.

*Except those isolating, shielding, suffering from COVID or Long COVID.
