After 27 years, Te Whanganui-A-Tara’s anarchist bookshop collective, the Freedom Shop, is still going strong – and we are ready to start a new chapter. We are excited to announce that we are now located in the second-hand bookshop Book Haven in 160 Riddiford St, right next door to Opportunity for Animals where we have been for the last ten years or so.

The two shops will remain separate, the Freedom Shop will still be an independent anarchist volunteer collective, but you will be able to browse (and buy) other books from Book Haven at the same time as discussing anarchism.

The best part of this arrangement is that it enables the Freedom Shop to be open every day from about 10am to 5pm – so no more excuses of “I went to the Freedom Shop but it was closed”!

We were planning to celebrate the move with a decent party, but COVID has once again thrown a high degree of uncertainty into the mix, so our plans will have to be postponed.

We would like to say a huge Thank-You to Opportunity for Animals for providing us a space and supporting us for many years. We wouldn’t still be here without you!

And if you’re interested in joining us, please pop into the shop and talk to us, or email us.
