On Monday 29 November, 22 teachers⋅es in Amed (Diyarbakir), the main city in the Kurdish regions of Turkey, were handed a suspension notice upon arrival at their school as they prepared to welcome their students. The majority are union members in Egitim Sen, some of whom are members of the leadership team of the local union branch. The suspension follows the early morning arrest and detention of some of them a year ago. Although the legal proceedings were dropped for lack of evidence, they were summoned⋅es in early November 2021 before a commission of the Ministry of Education charged with sanctioning them anyway. The reasons given are a denial of fundamental rights : having participated in demonstrations ; reading newspapers in Kurdish ; listening to Kurdish music…
The strategy is clear : the regime wants to scare people and dissuade them from opposing its racist and ultra-nationalist policies. Through these suspensions, it is entire families that Erdogan and his clique are pursuing with their vindictiveness. In any case, the proceedings will not be concluded for several months, or even years.
The member organisations of the International Labor Network of Solidarity and Struggle Network stand in solidarity with the suspended teachers and assure them of its fraternal and sororal support.
We stand resolutely with the teachers⋅es who everywhere choose to fight for a democratic school and the recognition of the right to self-determination of all peoples.
