The International Labor Network of Solidarity and Struggle welcomes the decision of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to declare itself competent over the atrocities committed in Palestine by the Israeli authorities, after more than five years of procrastination. We also welcome the opening of an investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Israelis in Palestine since 2014, particularly in the Gaza Strip where the victims number in the thousands.
We hope that, this time around, this investigation will be carried out despite the pressure and attempts to obstruct, made by the Israeli state and its allies, including the absurd accusations of anti Semitism that no one takes seriously anymore. Finally, we hope that the successor to Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda will show at least as much determination and independence in the face of the pressures which will inevitably be renewed.
As we were already asking in May 2020, it is high time to bring Israeli war criminals to court, some of whom like Benjamin Netanyahu and Benny Gantz still rule the country. It is time to issue international arrest warrants against the top commanders of the Israeli military and political power. As also provided for in international law, those responsible for population transfers in the West Bank should also be prosecuted for war crimes, and be punished as such.
The ICC is a recognized international body whose goal is to reach the truth and dispense justice. This goal should be enthusiastically pursued and facilitated by all justice-loving governments, with the possible exception of those who think they are guilty… We therefore call all government to give their full support to this investigation.
If Fatou Bensouda declared that “investigations take time” and urged the victims to be patient, she also stressed that “peace and justice should be considered as complementary imperatives”. A just peace in Palestine is what we have been asking for and waiting for, for over 70 years…
