On January 11, at 12 p.m., the Golovinsky District Court in Moscow was to sentence anarchist and mathematician Azat Miftakhov, as well as anarchist Elena Gorban and anti-fascist Andrei Eikin. As we have already reported, Azat Miftakhov was asked by the prosecution for 6 years of general regime, Elena Gorban – 4 years probation with a probationary period of 5 years, Andrei Eikin – 2 years probation with a probationary period of 3 years. However, the sentencing was postponed to January 18, starting at 12 o’clock. Court address: 31 Kosmodemyansky Street, Corp. 2, Kab. 406. Mask and gloves are required to enter the courthouse, but since the entrance to the building for non-participants is limited, the support group is likely to be forced to stand outside.
Elena Gorban and Andrey eikin, who, unlike Azat Miftakhov, are under a recognizance not to leave, as well as the defendants’ lawyers, did not see Azat in the courtroom and do not know whether he was brought to the Golovinsky court on January 11.
On this day, 50 to 200 people gathered near the court (according to various estimates). There were no arrests: the first to take an elderly woman to the paddy wagon, who began chanting “Freedom!”. Subsequently, seven other people were detained under various ridiculous pretexts.
The investigation alleges that the defendants Azat Miftakhov, Elena Gorban and Andrei Eikin were part of a group that broke a window in the empty room of one of the district offices of United Russia at night and threw a smoke bomb there. The main witness of the prosecution, on the basis of which it is based, is classified, his identity is unknown to the defense and the public.
Miftakhov has spent almost 2 years in the pre-trial detention center, Gorban and Eikin are under a recognizance not to leave, the rest of the defendants in the case were forced to leave Russia. According to the support group, the real reason for the persecution of Azat and other defendants are their anarchist and anti-fascist views.
On December 25, the court held a debate at which the defendants made the last word, as well as their lawyers. After that, members of a support group were detained outside the courthouse. On December 24, picketers-anarchists were detained near the Golovinsky court.
Recently, mathematicians appealed to the organizers of the International Mathematical Congress with a request to help in the release of political prisoner Azat Miftakhov. The letter was signed by 47 mathematicians from Princeton, Harvard, MIT, The University of Tokyo, the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Sorbonne and other universities and academies.
Scientists from different countries have called for a boycott of the International Congress of Mathematicians, which is due to take place in Russia in 2022.
